Amerie Jo Garza, a 10-year-old fourth-grader at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, is remembered as a hero for her courageous actions during the school shooting on May 24, 2022.
On the morning of the attack, Amerie had just received an Honor Roll certificate. When the gunman entered her classroom and announced, “You’re going to die,” Amerie attempted to call 911 using her new cell phone - a birthday gift she had recently received. She was shot while trying to seek help for her classmates .
In recognition of her bravery, the Girl Scouts of the USA posthumously awarded Amerie the Bronze Cross, one of the organization’s highest honors, bestowed for saving or attempting to save a life at the risk of one’s own life .

Amerie's favorite color was lavender, and she had a particular fondness for sunflowers. Amerie enjoyed indulging in Chick-fil-A nuggets and fries, as well as sipping on vanilla bean frappuccinos. She was a fan of BTS, often wearing a silver bracelet inscribed with "BTS". She loved drawing, crafting with Play-Doh, and swimming. She aspired to become an art teacher, a dream that highlighted her nurturing and imaginative spirit . Her artistic talents were celebrated in a mural in downtown Uvalde, depicting her in her favorite lavender dress, adorned with symbols of her passions. Amerie was also a proud Girl Scout, recently participating in a bridging ceremony to become a Junior Scout. She embraced the organization's mission of helping others, a value she demonstrated both in life and in her final moments.
