King Charles II (29 May 1630 – 6 February 1685) was King of Scotland from 1649 until 1651, and King of England, Scotland, and Ireland from the 1660 Restoration of the monarchy until his death in 1685.

Heroism[]

  • Undid most of Oliver Cromwell and the Puritan's policies and made theatre, makeup, sports, and Christmas legal again.
  • Charles attempted to introduce religious freedom for Catholics and Protestant dissenters with his 1672 Royal Declaration of Indulgence, but the English Parliament forced him to withdraw it.
  • Charles and his brother James joined and directed the firefighting effort during the Great Fire Of London.
  • Theatre licenses granted by Charles required that female parts be played by "their natural performers", rather than by boys as was often the practice before.
  • He granted Royal Assent to the Habeas Corpus Act 1679, considered one of the most important statutes in English constitutional history, which granted prisoners the right to appeal against their imprisonment if they believed it was unlawful.
