I never did see his face. The first time I was actually able to see [Huberty], he was sitting on a counter in about the middle of the building. Then he got up and started walking toward the door, where we had a better view of him from the neck down ... he stopped about six feet from the door, so I took the shot. He dropped the Uzi and was thrown back a few feet.

San Ysidro shooting[]
Foster was a member of the armed response unit dispatched to respond to reports of a mass shooting at a McDonalds in San Ysidro. Foster was deployed to a strategic position across the street, and at around 5:17 pm, Huberty, the gunman, walked into Foster's line of sight, allowing him to fire a shot at him, which severed his aorta just below his heart and exited through his spine, killing him almost instantly.
