
Denis Mukwege (born March 1 1955) is a gynaecologist and pastor in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He is the founder of Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, where he helps women who have been victims of sexual violence, which in used as a weapon of war in the Congo.
In 2018, Mukwege and Iraqi human rights activist Nadia Murad were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for "their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict".
Mukwege was the victim of an assassination attempt on 25 October 2012, when four armed men took his daughter hostage and shot his guard dead. He went into exile until January 2013, with the Panzi Hospital reporting that his absence had affected their ability to operate efficiently.
