Ignacio Echeverría Miralles de Imperial (May 25th, 1978 – June 3rd, 2017) was a Spanish banker. He moved to London, where he became a money laundering prevention analyst for HSBC.
On Saturday June 3rd, 2017, Echeverría cycled through Borough Market, only to discover it was being attacked by three Islamic terrorists. Seeing one of them assaulting a French woman, Echeverría took his skateboard off his shoulder and struck him with it, allowing her and several other people to escape. Another terrorist, later identified as Youssef Zaghba, was attacked by Echeverría while trying to kill a police officer. However, at this point the other two stabbed Echeverría to death.
After his death, his family employed a detective to try and find his body. Eventually, the British authorities confirmed him as a victim of the attack and called family members to identify his body, which was repatriated to Spain. Posthumously, Echeverría was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Civil Merit, the Silver Medal of the Police Order of Merit, the Gold Medal of the Community of Madrid and the Grand Cross of the Order for Civil Recognition of the Victims of Terrorism by the Spanish government and the George Medal for bravery by the British government.
