Irena Sendler was a Polish humanitarian, social worker, and nurse. She worked in the Polish Underground Resistance during World War II and was known as the female Oskar Schindler. From October 1943, she becomes the head of the children's section of Zegota, which is the Polish council to help aid Jews. During the Warsaw Uprising, Sendler worked in a hospital as a nurse where she hid a number of Jews there

During the war, she pursued activities such as rescuing Jews, mainly as part of the network of workers and volunteers from that department, which were mostly women.

In post-war communist Poland, Sendler continued her activism, but also worked in government. In 1965, she was honored as Righteous Among the Nations by the State of Israel.
