James Zadroga (February 8, 1971 - January 5, 2006) was a police officer in the NYPD who died of a respiratory disease connected his participation in search-and-rescue operations after the September 11 attacks. His death prompted then-governor of New York George Pataki to expand benefits for 9/11 first responders, and eventually President Barack Obama signed into law the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.
