Khloie Torres, a 10-year-old fourth-grader at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, displayed extraordinary bravery during the tragic school shooting on May 24, 2022.
Trapped in classroom 112 with the gunman, Khloie made multiple 911 calls over a span of 46 minutes, whispering critical information to dispatchers while trying to keep herself and her classmates calm and quiet. She reported the dire situation, stating, “Please hurry. There’s a lot of dead bodies,” and “Some of my teachers are still alive but they’re shot.”
Khloie also relayed instructions from the dispatcher to her classmates, urging them to stay silent as law enforcement officers gathered outside the classroom but delayed entry. Her composed demeanor and quick thinking under extreme duress were instrumental in keeping her peers informed and as safe as possible during the ordeal.
In recognition of her courage, Khloie was honored with the Kid Hero Award at the 2023 Texas Public Safety Conference. This award is typically given to a single child, but an exception was made to recognize both Khloie and fellow survivor Miah Cerrillo for their heroic actions during the shooting.
