Martin "Doco" Doherty was a volunteer in the Irish Republican Army who was killed preventing the Ulster Volunteer Force from bombing the Widow Scallans pub in Dublin.

Attempted bombing[]

In 1994, Doherty was working as a doorman at the Widow Scallans pub, where the political party Sinn Fein was holding a fundraiser for the families of IRA prisoners, when he became suspicious of two men carrying a holdall. Doherty accosted the men and tried to stop them entering, at which point they shot and killed him. Another doorman, Paddy Burke, was injured after shutting the door to prevent the shooters from entering the pub. However, Burke and Doherty's intervention prevented them from planting the bomb inside Widow Scallans and forced them to retreat. The terrorists abandoned the holdall on the ground, where the faulty bomb it contained detonated harmlessly.

As of January 28 2020, Doherty's murder has still not been solved.
