Patrick Sondheimer (June 18, 1980 - March 24, 2015) was the captain of Germanwings Flight 9525. He was hailed a hero for attempting to prevent his co-pilot from flying a passenger airliner. The father-of-two was only on board because he changed job to spend more time with his children'. He was an experienced pilot who had spent more than 6,000 flying hours on the Airbus A320-211 aircraft. He had flown with Germanwings parent company Lufthansa for ten years and had joined Germanwings in 2014.

Germanwings Flight 9525 was a scheduled international passenger flight from Barcelona–El Prat Airport in Spain to Düsseldorf Airport in Germany. The flight was operated by Germanwings, a low-cost carrier owned by the German airline Lufthansa. On 24 March 2015, the aircraft, an Airbus A320-211, crashed in the French Alps, killing all 150 people on board.

On March 24, 2015, during mid-flight of Germanwings Flight 9525, Patrick Sondheimer decided to take a toilet break and let first officer Andreas Lubitz control the aircraft. but when Patrick Sondheimer came back from his toilet break, he realized that the cockpit door was locked and that the aircraft was at low altitude, he grabbed an axe to try to break into the cockpit and stop Andreas Lubitz from crashing the plane, but it was too late. Germanwings Flight 9525 crashed into the French Alps, killing all 150 Occupants on board including Patrick Sondheimer and Andreas Lubitz.
