Peter Ganci, Jr. (October 27, 1946 - September 11, 2001) was a 33 year veteran firefighter for the New York City Fire Department and was promoted to Chief of Department.
Early life[]
Peter James Ganci, Jr. was born on October 27, 1946 in Queens to Peter Ganci, Sr. (1917-1989) and Clara C. Ganci (1918-1977).
Military career[]
During the Vietnam War, Peter Ganci served in the 82nd Airborne Division. When he returned to his home state of New York, he received an honorable discharge.
Firefighting career[]
Peter was appointed to the New York City Fire Department (F.D.N.Y.) in 1968 to Engine Company 92 in the Bronx. He later became a member of Ladder Company 111. As years had passed, he would later rise through the ranks of Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief, Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief and became Chief of Department in October 1999.
Death[]
On the morning of September 11, 2001, Peter responded to the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center after two airplanes crashed into the towers. He set up a command post in the lobby of the North Tower with Deputy Commissioner William Feehan. Peter was told to evacuate the Tower, Peter said "I am not leaving my men!" Both he and William perished and were among the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on that day. His body and his radio were recovered from the site.
