F**k you, I'm Millwall!
― Roy Larner while fighting the terrorists.
Roy Larner, also known as the Lion of London Bridge, is a British man who supports Millwall football team. Despite some villainous actions, such as being placed under anti-terror surveillance for threatening Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and claiming to be a National Front member, he is still a hero for his actions on June 3, 2017.
At the aforementioned date, terrorists Khuram Butt, Youseff Zaghba and Rachid Redouane attacked innocent people on London Bridge. Larner, who was in the area, charged at the attackers and sustained several knife wounds that could have killed him[1]. He was also found to have developed PTSD and insomnia, leading to erratic behaviour[2]. This allowed time for several people to escape. He was nominated for the George Cross Medal but did not receive it due to his criminal past[3], despite others having received it the same week and having a petition made that received 24,000 signatures[4].
After the act[]
In July 2017, a video surfaced of Larner shouting racist abuse at protesters was released, allegedly dated prior to the terror attacks that deemed him a hero[5]. He later responded to the allegations, saying "I have seen the video clip and I’m sorry to have caused any offence, it wasn’t intentional and something that took place months ago", as well as claiming they instigated the argument[6]. In 2018, Larner was accused of spitting on a news reporter, but was spared jail[7][8]. In 2019, Larner received a restraining order from his mother after he broke a TV set in their home; this was months after being caught with 230 grams of amphetamine. He violated this restraining order and was jailed for 5 weeks[2]. In March 2020, Larner was accused of racially-motivated abuse against a staff member at Maudsley Hospital the year before, but the charges were dropped after a witness to the offence failed to show in court[7]. In July 2020, Larner was caught with "golf ball-sized" packages of amphetamines, where in court he admitted to possession of class B drugs and was sentenced to a 21-day curfew[8].
