Seretse Khama was the first president of Botswana and the national hero of that country.
He was born in 1921 in the Protectorate of Bechuanalandia in a very rich family in Africa. After studying in South Africa, I travel to the United Kingdom, where I study more until I become a lawyer. There is conosio with Ruth Williams, a British employee with whom he would become his wife. Their marriage was very controversial since the racist gonierno in South Africa seemed unacceptable and pressured the United Kingdom to exile Seretse from Bechuanaland, what happened and Seretse with his wife had to go into exile in London.
The exile would not last long and they would return after several protests over the decision taken by the British. After returning, Seretse founded the Bechuanaland Democratic Party in an attempt to achieve the independence of Botswana, which he achieved and became its first president.
Seretse had to face a very poor Botswana by being almost forgotten by the British and without giving them enough resources. Shortly after independence, large reserves of diamonds are discovered in the country and, unlike the vast majority of African presidents, Seretse uses diamonds to improve the economy and help many Botswans out of poverty. Seretse also hires many rich and high-intellectual botsuans to teach things to less-trained or illiterate botsuans.
In the political arena, Seretse was someone who hated corruption and racism, which is why he never got along with the governments of South Africa and Rhodesia and helped the insurgents to overthrow the racist government in Rhodesia.
Seretse died in 1980 and left one of the greatest democratic legacies in the history of Africa.
