The Women's Protection Units (Yekîneyên Parastina Jin; YPJ) is a female militia and military branch of the Syrian Democratic Forces, dedicated to protecting the autonomous region of Rojava (or Syrian Kurdistan). They were created in 2013 during the Syrian Civil War to defend the Kurdish region of Rojava (which seeks independence from Syria), and is made up solely of women, who are responsible for defending Rojava from attacks by the Islamic State or the Syrian Army.
The YPJ have received multiple compliments from the international community for their decisive task in stopping the advance of the Islamic State in the region, managing to liberate multiple cities and considerably weaken the Islamic State. They have also contributed to improving the rights of women in Kurdistan and have made efforts to defend human rights.
